Human intuition cannot process it, cannot back-test it rigorously, and cannot execute without delay or emotion. The 1980s — When the Scientists Arrived
The era began with a simple observation: improving computing power, combined with mathematical models, could find repeatable edges that discretionary traders missed entirely. Jim Simons founded Renaissance Technologies in 1982. David Shaw launched D.E. Shaw in 1988. Goldman, Morgan Stanley, and JP Morgan stood up dedicated quant desks. The technology was modest by today's standards — basic statistical arbitrage, early signal processing, and the first automated execution systems. But the method was revolutionary. For the first time, a trading decision required a proof, not an opinion.
The 1990s — Factor Models and Electronic Markets
The Fama-French three-factor model in 1992 gave equity quants a rigorous framework for decomposing returns. Electronic trading platforms arrived. Markets decimalized. Data feeds became digitized and machine-readable. Back-testing across thousands of securities — previously a week of computation — became a morning task. Cross-sectional factor models became the dominant architecture: value, momentum, size, quality, expressed as systematic tilts across entire universes of securities simultaneously.
2000s — The Golden Age, Then the Reckoning
Co-location put firm servers physically adjacent to exchange matching engines. Microwave links cut execution latency from milliseconds to microseconds. Algorithmic trading dominated equity volume. Then August 2007 arrived — the Quant Quake. Crowded stat-arb strategies unwound simultaneously as one large fund de-levered. Correlations that had been near zero became near one overnight. Strategies that looked diversified in normal regimes were exposed as structurally identical. The lesson was not that the models were wrong. It was that liquidity risk and crowding were not in them.
2010s to 2022 — Machine Learning and the Alternative Data Era
Cheap cloud compute, GPUs, and open-source ML libraries restructured the research pipeline entirely. Traditional price and volume signals had become commoditized — too many firms running similar models on the same data. The new edge moved upstream, into alternative data: satellite imagery of retail parking lots, credit card transaction flows, NLP-parsed earnings call transcripts, shipping manifests, web-scraped job postings. Gradient-boosted ensembles and, later, deep learning architectures replaced linear factor regressions at the alpha layer. The firms that adapted rebuilt their entire research platforms around these tools. The firms that bolted ML onto legacy infrastructure got the worst of both worlds — the complexity of nonlinear models with none of the signal quality.
Why the Survivors Survived
Renaissance Technologies, D.E. Shaw, Two Sigma, and AQR share a specific set of traits that have nothing to do with model architecture and everything to do with institutional discipline. They never stopped investing in faster infrastructure and cleaner data pipelines. They built risk management into the research process, not as a downstream filter but as a first-class constraint. They hired scientists — physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists — who treated markets as a noisy data problem to solve, not a narrative to interpret. And critically, they maintained a culture where ideas had to survive brutal out-of-sample testing before touching capital.
The ones who disappeared — Long-Term Capital Management being the canonical example — had brilliant models and catastrophic blind spots around liquidity, leverage, and regime change. The math was correct. The assumptions were not.
Technology gave them the ability to find edges. Constant reinvention of that technology, paired with intellectual honesty and risk discipline, is why they are still running forty years later.
